Participatory Strategic Planning
----------The Business of taking a group on a journey from initial uncertainty to a point of clear purpose and commitment.
What it is
Most groups or organizations do not really engage in strategic planning, but simply carry out an annual ritual. This planning is largely done by a small team, or outsiders, or those not responsible for putting outcomes into place. That is the plan is written by someone else for the group. The plans often fail to accurately identify and prioritize the really significant or critical inhibitors or objectives and strategies for dealing with these – they are not comprehensive in considerations and strategies.
It is best applied and adapted when:
Beginning with the end in mind this PSP process applies the Workshop™ Method in a strategic thinking and planning framework– to take the journey from vision to action, from initial uncertainty to a point of clear purpose and commitment.
The premise is that a planning session is a communication event — a participatory forum for sharing perspectives and clarifying where to go in the future and how to get there – that moves from releasing Vision to reality checking of Underlying Inhibitors to forward moving Strategies.
The Significance of the PSP Process
The PSP Processes highlights the importance of engaging the group as a whole through each stage of the process. From claiming achievements and "here we are", through "windows of opportunity" and "releasing the future", to providing direction and "this is a way forward", resulting in practical steps, momentum and ownership.
